How to Dig in Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom
Barring Swordfighter Form, Monster Echoes are Zelda’s main method of fighting in Echoes of Wisdom. However, certain Echoes offer other abilities such as gliding. The Holmill Echo allows you to dig, which is an ability you’ll need if you’re planning on collecting all Might Crystals. Holmill only spawns in one region in Echoes of Wisdom, and you’ll need it for the “A Rift in Gerudo Desert” main quest.

Where to Find Holmill Echo
Holmill Location in Echoes of Wisdom
After clearing the Stilled Suthorn Forest, you’re given the choice to go to Gerudo Desert or Jabul Waters. The choice itself won’t matter since you’ll need to fix the rifts in both areas. However, the Gerudo Desert has a few Echoes that will make platforming easier, such as the Flying Tile and Platboom. If you work through the Gerudo Desert/”A Rift in Gerudo Desert,” you’ll eventually find the Ancestor’s Cave of Rest.
The Ancestor’s Cave of Rest is located north of Gerudo Town, specifically north of the red Lanmola spawn point. There’s a Waypoint statue in front of the Ancestor’s Cave of Rest. If you haven’t defeated the Lanmola, you’ll know you’re close to the Ancestor’s Cave of Rest if a sandstorm obscures your map.
After rescuing Dohna and
speaking to her at the Oasis
, the Ancestor’s Cave of Rest will be
marked on your map
, making it easier to find it if you have not already done so.
Inside the Ancestor’s Cave of Rest, you’ll see a large rift cutting you off from the ancestor’s tomb. Go left, and use Tri’s Bind ability to remove the giant boulder. Enter the room that was hidden by the boulder, and you’ll find two Holmills.
Holmills are mole-like creatures that burrow in the sand/dirt. They’ll dive back into hiding if you get too close, so use the Bind ability to pull them out. Then, summon an Echo to defeat it and learn the Holmill Echo.
How to Use Holmill
Where Should You Dig?
Summon Holmill just as you would with any other Echo. As soon as it’s summoned, Holmill will try to burrow in the dirt. If you summon Holmill over a spot that it can’t dig, it will leave itself vulnerable to enemy attacks.
Zelda can jump into the holes that Holmill digs. Certain caves have floors of sand that lead to suspended platforms you wouldn’t be able to reach normally. However, when used in Hyrule/3D map, jumping into a Holmill hole will make Zelda respawn.
You’ll want to use Holmill to dig small squares of dirt. There’s usually a Might Crystal hidden in these patches of dirt. In other cases, the patches may lead into a cave with a Heart Piece, such as the one east of Kakariko Village. You’ll need Holmill if you want to get every Heart Piece in Echoes of Wisdom.
