Key Takeaways

  • Inscryption, a popular horror deck-building roguelike, is now available on Xbox Game Pass.
  • Inscryption gained fame in 2021, receiving a “Mighty” rating on OpenCritic and over 110,000 positive Steam reviews.
  • The initial wave of October Xbox Game Pass releases includes Inscryption, with more titles expected in the second wave.

Xbox Game Pass has added Inscryption to its content library. This is the third new title to be offered to Xbox Game Pass members since the beginning of October 2024.

Inscryption is a deck-building roguelike with escape room-inspired puzzles and horror elements made by indie developer Daniel Mullins. Its first prototype was made during a 2018 game jam with a “sacrifices must be made” theme, which was also its original title. Inscryption went on to become a huge hit following its original release in late 2021, and is nowadays touted as one of the best roguelikes with satisfying gameplay loops.

Inscryption Arrives on Xbox Game Pass

Inscryption took a year and a half to reach Xbox consoles, having done so in April 2023. Another 18 months later, the hit Devolver Digital-published indie roguelike is now also available on Xbox Game Pass, as Microsoft’s subscription service added it on October 10. Since it’s not a day-one release, Inscryption is available across all tiers of the service bar XGP Core. It is playable on the Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and PC, in addition to being streamable via Xbox Cloud Gaming for those paying for the Ultimate tier of the service.

Inscryption‘s Xbox Game Pass debut boosts the platform’s selection of critically acclaimed titles. The deck-building roguelike took no time to establish itself as one of the best indie games of 2021, vowing fans and critics alike. Its level of acclaim is reflected in its “Mighty” rating on OpenCritic, where the game boasts an aggregate score of 86 and a 97% reviewer recommendation rate. As of this writing, mere days ahead of its third anniversary, Inscryption also has over 110,000 “Overwhelmingly Positive” user reviews on Steam.

The creepy roguelike concludes the initial wave of October 2024 Xbox Game Pass releases, which was announced on the first of the month. Microsoft is expected to detail its Wave 2 lineup in the days ahead, possibly on October 15, as the company has historically favored Tuesdays for such reveals.

In the meantime, Xbox Game Pass does already have one confirmed release for the second half of the month. That would be Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, which is slated to have its day-one debut on the service on October 25. The 2024 Call of Duty entry will only be available to PC Game Pass and XGP Ultimate members, in accordance with Microsoft’s recent subscriber tier revamp.
