While every companion in Dragon Age: The Veilguard has their merits, Bellara may stand out even more than the others due to her relatability. According to game director Corinne Busche in a fairly recent interview with IGN, Bellara is one of the more relatable companions due to the hyper-humanization of her character, despite actually being an elf — a characteristic that Busche personally found to be very attractive.

Bellara is unassuming, quirky, and appears innocent at times, exhibiting a pure heart that she’s not afraid to hide — all characteristics that might make certain players weak in the knees and fall in love with her at first sight. She loves fictional books and writing and actually has an infatuation with Neve Gallus, another of Dragon Age: The Veilguard‘s companions, likely due to the reputation Neve has earned as a private investigator mage in Thedas. While she can be serious at times, Bellara would much rather enjoy a casual conversation with someone about shared interests and hobbies than get straight down to business.

What might make Bellara more relatable than anything else is her tragic backstory and how she manages (or doesn’t manage) the pain. The full extent of this tragedy has yet to be revealed, but what is known is that Bellara lost someone very dear to her in an accident involving an elven artifact. Although she did whatever she could to save this companion, she was unable to. Now, despite all that she has been through, Bellara maintains an optimistic outlook and remains driven forward by her curiosity. This optimism could be nothing more than her way of masking her pain, but the fact that she is not afraid to share details about her tragic loss suggests she is willing to move on or already has.

Bellara is an elf mage and a Veil Jumper, which means she is an expert on elven ruins and has a deep well of knowledge about the artifacts that can be found within them. According to Busche in the same interview with IGN, players who choose to play as a rogue Veil Jumper or Veil Ranger might find consistently partnering with her in their journey to be beneficial. Specifically, Busche states that “Bellara’s a fantastic companion to set up that spec with electric vulnerabilities.” In light of that, players interested in playing as a rogue may find themselves leaning naturally toward Bellara as a romance option.

Based on what has been revealed so far, Bellara may even have more of a connection to the main story of Dragon Age: The Veilguard than any other companion, as will the elves in general. It has been confirmed that Bellara’s romance arc runs parallel to the main story, which means she may be more difficult to develop a romantic relationship with, as it will require players to progress through Dragon Age: The Veilguard‘s narrative before their relationship with her is allowed to flourish. Nevertheless, some players might find playing the long game with Bellara to be more appealing than reaching the end of a companion’s romance arc early in the game.

There are seven companions in Dragon Age: The Veilguard, but Bellara may be the prime romance choice for any player looking for a lighthearted romance in the game. It’s possible Bellara’s tragic backstory could interfere with her emotions in a romance with the player’s Rook, but assuming she maintains the optimistic outlook she is known for, players who choose to pursue a deeper relationship with her may be in for a good time. With her innocent curiosity, quirkiness, love for fiction, and deep knowledge of elven ruins, Bellara looks like an intriguing romantic partner in Dragon Age: The Veilguard​​​​​​.
